President's MessageHi, everyone! Well, the holidays are over, and hopefully you've found time to relax a bit. I love Christmas time, but I don't enjoy the hectic pace; I imagine I'm not alone in trying to figure out a way to make it less stressful and crazed around the holidays. I hope this finds you staying warm and dry! The weather here in OK has been really crazy; the high temp yesterday was 62, but this morning we had snow flurries, and the wind chill makes the temp feel like 29! Like the man (Will Rogers, in this case) said - `Don't like the weather in OK? Wait 10 minutes; it'll change! gg I hope everyone's eager to begin another year's stitching adventures ; we're gearing up for the coming year by voting on our favorite GCCs to offer as the chapter-subsidized BEE classes, for starters, and I know many of us are trying to get some UFOs finished and out of 'the pile' as well. This is one of my personal goals for the year, providing that no designer releases anything at all this year that I like. Otherwise, all bets are off. Another personal goal is to (finally!) create an ATC (Artist Trading Card) for the President's Challenge. The challenge has been held over for another year, so if you didn't get a chance last year to do this, or if you're new to the chapter and would like to join in on the fun, you can read all about it here on the website! Take a minute and check it out; it's going to be lots of fun! Be sure to take time for yourself the next few weeks. No matter what your choice - stitching, a good book, a great movie, a nice walk in the woods - we all need to carve time out of our busy schedules. Until next time! Kelly Jackson
Chapter NewsWe are growing again! Last count I was given today is 229 members and climbing. Some of our members were "spreading the word" at Seminar, but National is interested in spreading the word too. Little by little the word is getting out - CyberStitchers is a great place in CyberSpace! For our new members, besides the GCCs you have heard about, and our BEE (see below in Education Report), we also have Special Interest Groups. Different stitchers have gotten together for specific interests: Beading, stitching a Christmas ornament each month, Victoria Sampler/Lavendar & Lace designs, Brag Book, "Heart of My Heart" pattern stitch-a-long, Inspirations Magazine projects, the Dragonboat class, and of course, a UFO (Unfinished Fiber Object) group for members to encourage each other to finish GCC and EGA class pieces. Go to SIGs to see what is going on. ATC/President's Challenge: It has been decided to extend the Artist's Trading Card challenge for another year. You can read about the President's Challenge for more info. As autumn 2007 approaches, plans for an exchange will be set up - keep stitching and designing Folks!
Education ReportThe education committee, composed of Anne Long, Irene Staker, and Rissa Peace Root presents the following report.... We have a number of GCCs in various stages of progress: Beading Colorplay The proposed budget for 2007 does include a BEE 4. We are proposing offering 11 GCC classes to the chapter for our members only. For the newer members of the chapter, BEE stands for "Big Education Event" and this is our 4th year offering it! The chapter votes on which GCCs to offer - the 11 classes with the most votes are selected - and then each member has the opportunity to select 1 of the 11 classes to take for the cost of the text book alone. The chapter picks up the course fee and postage for you! I do consider your vote to be somewhat binding - as in, if you vote for a class that is selected, then you are automatically on the class list. If your class is not selected, you of course have the opportunity to select another class. Non-BEE classes will be offered if members request them. Don't forget to check and see which classes are being offered online by EGA National. There are 2 classes offered every 2 months, and this is another option for taking GCCs. The Jan-Feb offerings from National are Plum Blossoms and White Queen.
Petite Projects: The latest petite project has been uploaded to our yahoogroups website.
The project is called "Winter Landscape" and Instructions on how to save and print the petite projects is in the Files area of the petite project group. Here's the link to the petite projects group files: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CSPetiteProjects/files/ The project instructions are in pdf (Adobe) format. You will find the pdf file in the folder labeled "Current Petite Project". There is also a photo album labeled "Winter Landscape" in the CSPetiteProjects yahoogroup where you upload photos, scans, etc. of this project. If you upload a photo, etc, please put your name somewhere in the title so we know who it belongs to! Enjoy the project! BAM: BAM is Bead-a-Month and grew out of a SAM, Stitch-a-Month, program we purchased for several years. Our own Rissa picked up with BAM when SAM ran out of new files. The current SAM/BAM stitch is the Lazy Stitch. All diagrams are maintained in the CS-Stitch-A-Month yahoogroup. Look in the Files section in the Folder labeled "Files for BAM". If you are not a member of the CS-Stitch-A-Month group but would like to be, send an email to: CS-Stitch-a-Month-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Stitch-a-long: We have a few stitch-a-long groups going now such as the ornament group and a bead group. Please let me know if there is an interest in a group stitchalong, a small meeting stitchalong, or any other similar ideas you might have. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me. Please address Education Committee questions to:
Outreach ProjectsJudi continues to accept handmade bookmarks for the chapter's Bookmarks
for Literacy project. The requirements are as follows: Meg has been working continuously collecting stash to send to military spouses and deserves a big "thank you" from all of us. Please also remember to donate to this very worthwhile project. Meg is basically sending 3-4 full kits. If she knows it's a beginning stitcher, she sends small, easy ones. More elaborate for more advanced. The exception is quilters, where she sends just fabric. Meg has gotten a lot of charts and floss and fabric from people that she's made into kits so they have everything handy.Specific questions can be directed to Meg. Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Maintenance of this list now rests with the chapter members. We encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted. The committee always welcomes any ideas for chapter projects (either from the membership or the committee). As usual, it's a bit difficult to find something a chapter like ours can do. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted, and will be fully investigated by the committee. Please share your ideas with our Outreach Chair, Lynn.
Of InterestSue's New Year's Resolutions For Stitchers (of COURSE there had to be some):
Hmm. Eight sounds like a good number. One should not get carried away. (Oops! THAT is another resolution isn't it!?) 2007 Nashville Market: It is that time of year again. February 8-12 is a big needlework industry trade show, the Nashville Market. Our favorite designers are showing off their latest designs, needlework supply companies are showing off the latest and greatest gadgets, and shop owners have their customers impatiently waiting to see what is new. Some online shops have teasers up online already, and some items can be preordered. If you have never had the privilege to go to a needlework trade show, oh boy! I got to go to Charlotte once a few years ago to help man the booth for a silk fiber company. What is the perfect weekend? All expenses paid trip to Charlotte, sharing a SUITE with a view of downtown Charlotte with two nice ladies (one who is a good friend from home), drooling during the day over fibers, charts, canvases, and gadgets, and a couple pleasant evenings of "just the girls" - we invited a few other folks we knew (my LNS owner and Theresa from Shakespeare's Peddler) back to kick back, watch a movie, and order room service. SPOILED! Of course the BEST part was the show! You could see EVERYTHING imaginable in the needlework world inside the Convention Center. I got to meet some of my favorite designers. I got to see fibers up close and personal. In one room were all my favorites charts, fibers, and toys. I got to see all the new stuff before it hit the shops. I even sold silk floss to Shay Pendray LOL (and was teased about it afterwards - did you KNOW who that WAS!?!). Needless to say, it was a great couple of days. Of course, the next best thing to being there comes in a couple of weeks when all the new goodies will be hitting our LNS's and showing up online. What was it I said about not tripling my stash? LOL! Well, I should clarify about New Year's Resolutions. I am a high school teacher, so I don't make New Year's resolutions. I make June resolutions! That is when I have time to do something about them LOL, and then you KNOW the first thing I want to do is go on a road trip to my favorite shops for some stash shopping! Dragonboats Class: The Dragonboats class is still up and running on yahoogroups. We have left it up as people continued to have an interest in it as new members have joined. If you are interested in making one of these cute little ornaments, the class is free for all members. Go to yahoogroups.com and sign up for CSDragonboats, or email Sue for an invitation.
