President's Message

Hello, everyone! I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready for the season to change! Here in Oklahoma we actually get to see the changes, and feel them, and I'm oh-so-ready for summer to be gone and autumn to come! We had a taste of it the last couple of weeks, but now we're back to summer temperatures again. Watch out, allergies! ;)

As we get back into the swing of another school year, I'd like to send condolences to those in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania who have been so recently touched by the tragedy of school violence. I work in a public high school, and not a day goes by that I don't pray that this violence stops and that my school (and my children, as well, who both attend the school I work at) will be spared this horror. My prayers are with you all.

On a brighter note, I hope everyone's finding some stitching time. I know it's been hard for me recently, but I'm working on it! I have another GCC coming up, and I'm trying to finish up one, as well as getting some ornaments stitched up for the holidays. I give my children several Christmas ornaments each year in their stockings, so when they are out on their own, they'll have something to adorn their own trees with, even if the tree is only 3 ft. tall! (gg)

Speaking of ornaments, our donation deadline for the diabetes and breast cancer benefit auctions is rapidly approaching! October 20th, to be exact, so everyone who's planning on donating an ornament should put on some speed and get those ornaments finished and mailed to our coordinators!    Another item I need to mention is the President's Challenge - Artist Trading Cards! I still haven't managed to get an idea together for one, but I'm still hoping! I can't wait to see what everyone's come up with! Until next time, stitch as much as you can and enjoy the time you have with family and friends!

Chapter News

We currently have 219 members! We have come a LONG way!! (That is Sue putting on her historian hat and remembering when CyberStitchers was just an idea.)

Volunteers Needed:

We are still in need of a Parliamentarian.

From TVR:

From: The Annual Fund Committee

The introduction to the Annual Fund Campaign for the Embroiderers' Guild of America will be presented to the membership in the December issue of Needle Arts . As a prelude to that announcement and a first step to laying a foundation, we are requesting that each region and chapter take a leadership role in this effort. By raising additional funds for EGA, we will be able to reach our goals for 2010, which include providing publications, special lectures, programs, classes, educational opportunities, items for the new national headquarters, and enhancements for the textile collections.

In addition to initiating an Annual Fund Campaign, we will seek institutional funding from corporations, foundations, and government. However, before we can do this, we must demonstrate our own commitment to embroidery as a valued historical art form. We are now asking that each of the thirteen regions make a minimum donation of $100 and each chapter a minimum donation of $30.

As we approach our 50th Anniversary, the star which is the future of EGA has never shone brighter, our direction never more far reaching, our love of needlework never more passionate! May the joy of "giving back" be reflected in each of us as we open our hearts as well as our wallets to preserve our heritage. To demonstrate our appreciation for your dedication and support of EGA, your leadership gifts will be announced to the membership in the March issue of Needle Arts.

Ornament Exchange 2006:

There is interest in having an ornament exchange again this year. Last year we had 10 folks participate. Already we are up to 18 definates and 5 maybes. There is still time to join! Karen has generously volunteered once again to collect and redistribute the ornaments for us. Here are the particulars:

You will need to email Karen to get her snail mail address. There is a December 5th deadline for the ornaments to reach Karen. She will have them mailed to their new homes early the next week at the latest. Each ornament must come with a way to mail it on to the next person...a mailing envelope or a box that Karen can reuse by just changing the mailing label. Also include a mailing label to yourself for Karen to just paste on the package of the ornament she is sending back to you and enough postage (stamps!) to mail your ornament to the next person (you will know how much this is when you put on the postage to send it to Karen.).

Should be a great exchange! Any needlework is fair game - canvas, hardanger, crewel, crossstitch, quilting. Have fun!

Classes that ended since our last meeting in July:

17th C English Style Sampler, section 2
Casalguidi & Lavender
Grrcia
To The Acorn

Payment notices for our 4th quarter classes are going out. Here are our 4th quarter classes, along with the number of open spots (if any):

Algerian Eye to cZar - now has 8 open spots; not eligible for your BEE benefit
Crewel Choices - 8 open spots; not eligible for your BEE benefit
Fantasy Remembered, section 2 - 0 open spots
Grrcia - now has 6 open spots; not eligible for your BEE benefit
Handy Huswif - only 1 open spots; eligible for your BEE benefit
Luck of the Irish - 9 open spots; eligible for your BEE benefit
Tiramisu, section 4 - 0 open spots; two on a waiting list. not eligible for your BEE benefit

For our new members, the "BEE benefit" is an education program that CyberStitchers has been pleased to offer for 3 years. The chapter voted at the beginning of the year and selected 10 GCCs for the BEE benefit. The benefit part is that the chapter picks up your course fee and postage for this class! Each members is allowed to select 1 BEE class. You can join a BEE class as a non-BEE student, but you are responsible for a share of the course fee and the postage - this is $16.50 for US students, $20 for students outside the US. The remaining BEE classes with open spots are Handy Huswif and Luck of the Irish.

Now for a caveat.....if you request a BEE class, let's say at the beginning of the year, but that class doesn't register until October, you must be a member of CyberStitchers in October when I send out payment info. So if you let your membership lapse in September, Anne removes your name from the class roster. If you renew late, she can add you back IF there are still spots in the class. The BEE classes have been extremely popular and many have waiting lists so failing to renew on time could result in losing a coveted spot in a popular GCC. Once names are removed from a class list due to failure to renew membership in CyberStitchers, Anne offers up the spot to the next person on the list. It's only fair; Anne has no way of knowing if a person has forgotten to renew, or is leaving the chapter. She can't hold spots in classes on the off chance that someone is renewing late. Also, if you do renew late, Anne will add you to the bottom of the waiting list for the class. :-( So, please don't forget to renew your membership!

In addition to "BEE classes", we've been registering other GCCs. In these classes each student is responsible for her/his share of the course fee and postage costs. Anne still had open spots in a number of non-BEE classes - Algerian Eye to cZar, Crewel Choices, Fantasy Remembered, and Grrcia. She was also looking for 2 people to take Beading Color Play. This is a non-BEE class. Registration is on hold for that class until Anne can find 2 more students to fill out the class.

"I Do, I Do" is retiring at the end of this year. We are starting a list for this class. If we can get at least 10 people to sign up (and pay for) the class, we'll register it. So far we have 2 people interested.

Petite Projects:

The latest petite project has been uploaded to our yahoogroups website. The project is called "Rice Stitch Pincushion/Ornament and was designed by Kathleen Rake.

Instructions on how to save and print the petite projects is in the Files area of the petite project group. Here's the link to the
petite projects group files:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CSPetiteProjects/files/

The project instructions are in pdf (Adobe) format. You will find the pdf file in the folder labeled "Current Petite Project". There is also a photo album labeled "Rice Stitch Pincushion" in the CSPetiteProjects yahoogroup where you upload photos, scans, etc of this project. If you upload a photo, etc, please put your name somewhere in the title so we know who it belongs to!

Enjoy the project!

BAM:

BAM is Bead-a-Month and grew out of a SAM, Stitch-a-Month, program we purchased for several years. Our own Rissa picked up with BAM when SAM ran out of new files. The current SAM/BAM stitch is the Beaded Picot Stitch. All diagrams are maintained in the CS-Stitch-A-Month yahoogroup. Look in the Files section in the Folder labeled "Files for BAM". If you are not a member of the CS-Stitch-A-Month group but would like to be, send an email to:

CS-Stitch-a-Month-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Stitch-a-long:

We have a few stitch-a-long groups going now such as the ornament group and a bead group. Please let me know if there is an interest in a group stitchalong, a small meeting stitchalong, or any other similar ideas you might have. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to email me.

Please address Education Committee questions to:

Outreach Projects

Judi continues to accept handmade bookmarks for the chapter's Bookmarks for Literacy project. The requirements are as follows:
- make a bookmark (or more than one, if you wish), in any technique.
- send an e-mail to Judi to ask for her shipping address.
- send your bookmark to Judi.
- Judi will send/deliver the members' bookmarks to a literacy organization on behalf of the chapter.

The Outreach Committee is moving along with the chapter's ornament donation project. Anne will again be coordinating the diabetes donations and Marian will coordinate the breast cancer ornament donations. Any donations should be delivered to either Anne or Marian by October 20. This date is fast approaching so please consider both of these worthwhile charities. Please contact Anne and/or Marian to get their mailing addresses.

Meg has been working continuously collecting stash to send to military spouses and deserves a big "thank you" from all of us. Please also remember to donate to this very worthwhile project. Specific questions can be directed to Meg.

Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Maintenance of this list now rests with the chapter members. We encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted.

The committee always welcomes any ideas for chapter projects (either from the membership or the committee). As usual, it's a bit difficult to find something a chapter like ours can do. Any ideas will be gratefully accepted, and will be fully investigated by the committee. Please share your ideas with our Outreach Chair, Lynn.

Of Interest

Book News:

A book of almost mythical proportion among stitchers is Darlene O'Steen's, The Proper Stitch: A Guide for Counted Thread. It was published by Just Cross Stitch in July of 1994 and went out of print a few years ago. I noted a used copy on Amazon going for around $199 (that MIGHT be a hardcover) and a rare listing on eBay that was up to $41.00 for over 3 days left on the auction. Copies of this book became like gold!

Well if you missed out the first time, good news! A paperback copy of the book is being rereleased! It is slated for December, but may be available in November. One store newsletter said they will take preorders with a price of $44.95. Check with your LNS to see if they can get it for you!

Just Cross Stitch Ornament Issue:

Every year JCS publishes a special issue of all Christmas ornaments. Many of our favorite designers have each designed an ornament for the issue. Many of them share stories of Christmas traditions in their family, as well as favorite recipes.

Since this issue has always been a favotire, JCS has gone one step further this year. In addition to the yearly ornament issue, JCS has taken some of the favorite ornaments from the past ten years and put them together in one book, Just Cross Stitch Christmas Ornaments 10th Anniversary Collection. Whether you have been collecting the ornament issues, or are new to them, this book is a nice addition to your stash.

Dragonboats Class:

The Dragonboats class is still up and running on yahoogroups. There was a recent influx of members, so we will leave it up for a while longer. If you are interested in making one of these cute little ornaments, the class is free for all members. Go to yahoogroups.com and sign up for CSDragonboats, or email Sue for an invitation.
