President's Message

Hello, everyone, and welcome to 2006! I can't believe we're already saying that number! It seems like just yesterday everyone was in a panic over the Y2K bug! <gg>

I hope everyone's looking forward to a terrific year with CyberStitchers! I know I am! We're going to try to offer BEE3, there should be another President's Challenge (assuming I can come up with some halfway decent idea <gg>), all the SIGs we have going now, and of course, ICCs and GCCs. So many opportunities to learn and expand our love of the needlearts. I'm just too excited about it all!

One of my goals this year is to increase the number of stitchers in my (f2f) stitching group, and to teach someone who doesn't know how to stitch. Another goal is to finally enter a piece in our State Fair. What stitching goals have you set for yourself? If you haven't thought about it yet, why not take a minute and consider what you would like 2006 to hold for you?

Here's wishing you a wonderful year full of happiness, prosperity, and peace.
Kelly Jackson
President, CyberStitchers

Important Note from the Board about Canadian Dues:

Regretfully, the board has decided that we cannot continue to pay the extra charges for postage that National passes along to our Canadian members. Since we do not pay the postage for any of our other members, in or out of the US, and the costs have doubled, we can no longer cover this extra charge. We are putting these funds into our BEE instead to keep that going for another year as that benefits the entire chapter. Starting this year, Canadian dues will be $12 higher. This means totals of $57 for the next year for primary members and $28 for plural members.

Outreach Projects

Judi thanks everyone who has sent handmade bookmarks for the chapter's Bookmarks for Literacy project -- and reminds us that she is still accepting bookmarks. The children attending her local library's literacy programs are going to be so thrilled to receive them!
- make a bookmark (or more than one, if you wish), in any technique.
- send an e-mail to Judi to ask for her shipping address.
- send your bookmark to Judi.
- Judi will send/deliver the members' bookmarks to a literacy organization on behalf of the chapter.

Meg continues to collect needlework stash donations, to be donated in the name of our chapter to fellow stitchers who lost everything during the recent hurricanes. Members are invited to consider sending Meg extra needlework supply items (such as like-new threads, needles, scissors, hoops, fabric, charts, and magazines) or complete kits -- which will then be redistributed to those in need of a little stitching sunshine. Contact Meg for further information on how to help, and thank you to those who have generously donated so far!

Our "Outreach for One" folder is still there to provide members with other ideas for outreach. Go to our cyberstitchers_ega Yahoo! group. Click on "Links", then on "Outreach for One" folder. Some of the possibilities you will find there are: Angels for Hope, CASA ornaments, Cole's Quilts, Quilts of Hope, and St. Jude Bookmarks. We also encourage members to post other links to charities you know of that need assistance, or you can send the information to our Outreach Chair, Lynn, and the committee will see that it gets posted. If you choose to participate in one of these programs, please do take photos of your finished pieces before sending them to the charity of your choice. Then post a little note to the Chat4 list (between meetings) or on our main cyberstitchers_ega list (during meetings) to let the rest of the membership see what you've done. That's our version of "show and tell" which is a regular feature of f2f (face to face) chapter meetings. We can also share them in future newsletters with your permission.

Education Report

The Education committee of CyberStitchers is pleased to announce Big Education Event 3 (BEE 3) for next year. We plan to offer every member of CyberStitchers chapter the opportunity to take one (1) GCC class next year. The chapter will underwrite the course fee and postage, members will pay for the course booklet and supplies only! We plan to sponsor 10 GCCs, starting in the 2nd quarter of 2006.

This year's BEE will be selected from all the current EGA GCC classes. Each member will be asked to vote for only one class - the class he/she would like to take under this special event. The variety of classes available through EGA means that there should be a class that interests each person. Due to the number of classes and the limitations of Yahoo polls, I will have to set up 2 polls but that does not mean you get to pick a class from poll 1 and a class from poll 2! If you do happen to vote in 2 polls, I will arbitrarily choose which vote will count for you.

Every member is strongly encouraged to sign up for a class.

The top 10 choices will be offered. The class schedule will be established by The Education Chair, working with the education committee, after the poll is completed. If a class receives sufficient votes to justify two groups, it may or may not be offered twice. You will be able to see the poll results while the poll is in progress. The chapter will attempt to fill every class to capacity by opening the registration to paying participants from CyberStitchers, and then from other EGA chapters.

Here's the guidelines on how we will operate this wonderful opportunity:

1. Members who are taking the class as their benefit class have the first opportunity to sign up. Members are expected to take the class they voted for unless that class is not offered. If your choice is not selected for BEE 3, you will be allowed to select another class so long as it is not already full.

2. Other members will be allowed to join the class as fee-paying students. They will pay the text fee plus $16.50 for course fee and postage, if in the US; $20.00 if outside the US. The course fee and postage amount has gone up from last year due to the USPS raising their postage rates.

3. Members who already have the text but who want to take the course will be allowed to sign up during this time. They will pay the $16.50/$20.00 course and postage fee, but no text fee.

4. Any remaining openings will be made available to other EGA members through the EGA yahoo groups list and other such means. They will also pay the $16.50/$20.00 course and postage fee and the text fee (if they need the text).

5. Coordinators for the classes will not pay for their texts. Normally coordinators do not pay a share of the course fee as a way of thanking them for the work they do as coordinator. If someone is a coordinator, then the text fee counts as his/her benefit.

I will be creating the polls shortly for BEE 3. The polls will stay open until the end of February which will give us about a month to vote. I will post a message when I have the polls set up.

BEE 3 classes won't be registered until 2nd quarter 2006. This will give us all a chance to catch up on our GCCs before tackling any new ones!

If you have any questions, please post them on chat4cyberstitchers@yahoogroups.com .

Of Interest

Congratulations to our own president, Kelly, for her writeup in the Nordic Needle's newsletter, issue #160 sent via email on 1/16/06.. Notice that pitch for CyberStitchers in there? http://nordicneedle.com/newsletters/_100/160.shtml

If you haven't had the chance yet, you can read all about EGA headquarters in the Louisville Courier-Journal in an article written by Bob Hill, "Light's right to keep guild in stitches". You can reach Bob Hill at (502) 582-4646 or e-mail him at bhill@courier-journal.com. You can also read this column at:
http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2006601190387 . Guess what, they mention a "cyberstitchers" group!
Sandy Sweeney passed along that, "Headquarters wants to especially thank Dorothy Graves, Nancy Sievers, Harold Gordon, Donna Stout and Mary Julia Kuhn for their work on this story. Mary Julia Kuhn was not in the office the day of Bob's visit, but it's obvious she was able to get in touch with him to 'shed some light'. Maybe Louisville will now know who we are, will come to visit, and will hear more and more and more about us in the next few months and years. (I can't wait to see the traffic gridlock in downtown in our 2008 anniversary year.)"

If you are in Louisville, remember that the Margaret Parshall Gallery now has the Audrey Francini Exhibit.

You can now look at the offerings for National Seminar 2006 to be held in Richmond, Virginia, October 23-30, 2006. To see class descriptions go to Seminar 2006 on the EGA website. Also, please note that Share-A-Stitch is June 22-25. See the Calendar section below for information.

From Nordic Needle: The numbering system for Needle Necessities' overdyed floss has been changed by the manufacturer. A zero has been added at the end of every number, so if, for example, an older pattern calls for color 125, you should purchase 1250.

From Doug Kreinik:
Balger and Kreinik Braids are the same product and always have been. The history of the word Balger is that my parents enjoyed the French language, and coined the French sounding name Balger. As our company grew, people were seeking out the Balger Company, so, as good listeners and problem solvers, we decided to place emphasis on the brand name Kreinik. This enabled shopowners and stitchers the opportunity to find Balger more readily.
For your information,Kreinik Braids are all manufactured in the US in Parkersburg WV.

Doug Kreinik

Angels for JoAnn

Deanna Funk recently posted in the EGA list: EGAHQ, this obituary will run in our next newsletter. Since I have had inquiries, I thought you should be aware of JoAnn's passing. I am also sending it to the "EGA List."

JoAnn Cappellin completed her duties as President of the Prairie Arts Chapter of EGA (Springfield IL, Heartland Region) by hosting the annual meeting and 20th anniversary party at her house on Tuesday December 13. She passed away early Friday morning, December 16, after a long struggle with ovarian cancer. Amid many rounds of chemo JoAnn never missed a meeting. JoAnn loved EGA and was a tireless worker for our chapter. She was more than generous with her time, talent, organization, and money. For many years JoAnn headed our chapter's effort to decorate a tree for the Festival of Trees, working on it all year long. She asked the chapter to make an "Angel Tree" next year in her memory. The family asks that any monetary donations be sent to the Memorial Medical Center Foundation (701 N First Street, Springfield IL 62702) for ovarian cancer research. JoAnn will be missed.

After reading this info, which Kelly kindly posted to our group, I thought it would be extra special if we reached out to our fellow stitchers in Prairie Arts and joined in making JoAnn's special tree. Remember, JoAnn wanted angels. I am happy to collect up any angel ornaments that CS members wish to donate. I will contact someone from Prairie Arts in order to get a deadline, and post further info to the group.
